"The alchemists spent years in their laboratories, observing the fire that purified the metals. They spent so much time close to the fire that gradually they gave up the vanities of the world. They discovered that the purification of metals had led to the purification of themselves. " (84)
The study of science came from the alchemists, people who dedicated their life's to find the socerer's stone, the elixir of life and turning any metal into gold. They purified metals from sunrise until dawn, they watched and studied the process so much that it became more than a job. They cleaned themselves through the process. As humans, we can all relate to this. When we have a hobby we absolutely love like exercising, meditating or reading it helps you get rid of the stress and in a way, we feel in peace. Those few hours a week where we do what we love, helps you reflect and maybe for a few seconds see how beautiful life is.
In the book, Santiago purifies himself through traveling across the dessert or talking to his sheep.
"Imagine if everyone went around transforming lead into gold. Gold would lose its value". (85)
We often ask why there's evil in the world, but imagine life without it. There are problems that make us reflect about everything we've done and very few times we thank the superior forces for putting those obstacles in front of us. Most people have a very weird distortion about the meaning of the word "perfect". They think perfect is having a day without problems, being okay with everyone, disappearing those people that have made them suffer, etc. But this idea of perfect is in the best definition for the word imperfect. So I ask you one more time, what is perfection? Perfection is what we live daily from the moment we wake up very early in the morning to the homework and failed tests. Because thank to this things, we appreciate the weekends where we can sleep a little longer, a long day after school where you have a free afternoon 'cause the teacher was nice and didn't leave you any homework or the times when you've aced a test. There must be bad to appreciate good. It's a balance and everything would lose it's value if we could have it any time we want, all the lessons would be lost.
