"Whenever someone knocks on my door, there's a part of me that still expects them to be carrying some sort of food" (173)
This is a rule when someone close to you dies, people bring you food thinking it will make a difference. When all you need is to grief in peace, from experience I can say that you do appreciate when they come to offer you their condolences. Maybe some people find comfort in obligatory words and reheatable food but that just wasn't Josh Bennett. He threw it all away and ordered pizza, which makes sense because eating reheatable lasagna every day must be tiering.
Nastya and Josh are spending a lot of time together, mostly he talks and she listens. She loves ice cream and he loves spending time with her, that right there is something Josh had forgotten. Spending time with someone you care about and actually enjoying it. I think it must be nice to start feeling alive again, after all of the things they've both been through. She started helping Josh with his shop assignments. Since Nastya doesn't talk to anyone but Josh, they only have conversations at Josh's house. He hasn't told anyone that she speaks, I would do the same because at the end of the day it feels good be needed.
"Damn can she bake. She brought those peanut butter cookies over last week covered in sugar with a crisscross pattern across the top. As soon as I looked at them, I remembered that my mom used to make them, too, but I had completley forgotten. And it made me wonder how many other things about her I had forgotten." (180)
This quote might be very simple but I couldn't find anything better to explain death, there's key word; forgotten. This couldn't be more certain, when someone dies first it's all a blur and a sudden shock. You try to remember the times you spent together and cherish them. But as time passes, sadness covers it all and their faces are clear no more. And Nastya made Josh remember his mom and wonders what else he's forgotten about her. They take care of each other in every way, to the point where Josh ended a relationship for her. Not because they're dating because they're not, they're just very good friends who know everything about each other but still there's always a physical attraction hanging in the air between them; for me this is the best kind of relationship you can have. I find it amazing how Josh is so used to death that when his grandpa dies, he just doesn't care.
