*SPOILER ALERT*
Now we can read a little about Josh’s point of view, he pretends Nastya’s not on his shop class. She hasn't talked to anyone for a little more than two years, she stopped when all of the memories from that day were triggered... Josh's life hasn't been easy either, he lives alone because his mom and sister died on a car crash when he was 8 and his dad had a heart attack. If I were in his shoes I don't know what I would do, because life's not a picnic and that can happen to anyone. Shatters me how he talks about the last happy day he had:
"It was March and it was my turn to go with my mom, but since that's when the game was, I begged to go with my dad instead. I told my mom she could have April and May to make up for it. Because I was suck a fucking prize. My mom said it sounds like a good deal to her and made me shake on it. My dad and I got home at six o'clock. I had fallen asleep in the car on the way home. He woke me up when we pulled in but ended up carrying me into the house anyway because my ass was not crawling out of the car. We ate too much, laughed too much, yelled to much. My stomach hurt. My face was sunburnt. I lost my voice adn I couldn't keep my eyes open. It was the last happy day of my life."(76-77)
I can't imagine how much he regretted not going with his mom because that was the last day he had with her. This quote talks about all of us because of how much we give everything for granted and how arrogant we are. It's amazing how many beautiful things there are on just one day and we don't notice them because we assume they'll always be there. But when there are gone, that's when we care enough to start wanting them again.
Nastya loves running, she runs every night until her legs burn and the vomit is up her throat. One day he finds Josh working on his garage, she sits with him never speaking but both of them knowing that way is better.
"There are twenty-seven bones in your hand and wrist. Twenty-two of mine were broken. Relatively speaking my hand is kind of a miracle. It's full of plates and screws, and even after several surgeries, it still doesn't look quite right. But it worked better than they thought it would and it's not like it can't do anything; just can't do the one thing I want it to. The thing that made me, me."(96)
There are things we do that are part of who we are, they shape you and define you as a human being. For some it's maybe cooking or drawing but for Nastya it was music. It helped her in every way, she loved the piano and was very good at it; she used to play at restaurants and practiced like crazy. But it was gone in a flash, he tore her apart taking with him the one thing that people craved from her. After her accident Nastya started to recover yes, her physical body but the more her body healed, the more fractured her mind became. She started talking to Josh, he likes listening what she has to say and keeps her his secret.
