"Once upon a time, there was a little girl. Now there is a new one. There is always a new one." (79)
Since Kyla is starting to grow up, Ray makes her look for a new one. She has hope that when she finds him a new Alice, he'll let her go. They formulate a plan. Is sick what Rays does, I'm still uncertain if his mental issues are his fault; because how we've learned that his mom wasn't the best person in the world... The traumas he was, came from his mom; she was a sick woman who harmed Ray so much that now he has nothing more than hatred. To my point of view, he thinks he's saving those poor girls with his sanity.
Kyla is wrong in one thing, when she finds him the new Alice; Ray doesn't call her Alice. He calls her Annabelle, not Alice. She's desperate but knows she has to go through the plan Ray formulated to get his hands on Annabelle.
"Once upon a time, there was a little girl. She took long showers every night, swimming in the water rushing over her and washing her hair till it squeaked when she ran her hands down it, parents sighing why do you have to be so clean? It was like she knew, in a way. Like that water was grace and soon she would not be able to find it. Soon nothing would make her more than what she was. Nothing would make her whole." (105)
I do believe this; in a way Kyla knew that her future wasn't as sweet and easy as her present. That's why she took long hot showers and ate her favorite food, because deep inside of her she knew it would all be over soon... Things like this happen to all of us, we get little hints but we give most of them for granted. Because we assume the small things will always be there, but in s flash when they're gone; thats when we miss them regretting we didn't took advantage of them when we had them.
